Our Story

In God's Hands for Over 60 Years

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church began on September 17, 1961, with the Reverend Eldor Harmann leading the first worship service for 10 families at his home in Martinsville. From July of 1962 until 1965, various seminary students, vicars, and neighboring pastors assisted in keeping the small congregation going. In January of 1963, Prince of Peace purchased the old Catholic church on the corner of Pike and Wayne Streets.

In July of 1965, Pastor Daniel Bell was installed as the second pastor. At that time there were 39 communicant and 60 baptized members. He served until August of 1973. After a couple of interim pastors, Rev. Wayne Wilke was installed as pastor on July 14, 1974. During Pastor Wilke’s tenure, church membership grew to over 130 communicant and 209 baptized members, with average worship attendance at 98.  In December of 1977, Pastor Robert Voehl was installed as the 4th pastor at Prince of Peace. He faithfully served the people of Martinsville until July of 1988. One year later on July 9, 1989, Pastor Nathan Janssen became the 5th (and current) pastor at Prince of Peace.

Recent years have been eventful with the addition of Precious Playmates Daycare in 1995, our new church building and relocation in 1997, the beginning of Prince of Peace Lutheran School in 1998, and the first phase of our school building in 2000. In 2012 the school basement was completed as a gym and fellowship area with kitchen, showers, and balcony viewing areas.
